About Reverie

The Creative Journey of Reverie - Neil Martin Cantillana

Concept Sketch

These ideas were conceived around 1 am on February 17th. The basic blade shape originated from a sketch of an old reblade I had in mind. Despite my strong desire to delve into actual knifemaking, the only knife steel available to me at the time was inexpensive Damascus. Although cautioned against it by forums, I pondered the possibility of utilizing the laminated steel pattern as a hole pattern to lighten a trainer blade. This approach addressed an issue I noticed with typical liveblade-style balanced trainer blades, which often feature holes instead of proper grinds, detracting from their authentic appearance.

Modifications made after the first round of voting: V1

I began by modeling the blades with a false hollow grind and a Damascus hole pattern, which garnered positive feedback from the community. Feedback pointed out that the initial handle design bore resemblances to an existing knife, but people appreciated the functionality of the block weight system.

Subsequently, I revised the face pattern and experimented with a handle slot technique reminiscent of the Nabalis Marble face texture, albeit in the form of a slot. I briefly toyed with the faux speed channel pattern but intend to revert to the original in the upcoming version.

V3 - V5

Modifications made after the first round of voting: V3-V5

Versions V3 to V5 of "Reverie" are basically similar, with only minor adjustments made to the balance.

V6

Modifications made after the first round of voting: V6 (also the first round voting model)

In this iteration, I returned to the original speed channel style, introduced inset jimping, and enhanced the visibility of the slot's mill line. This version was mistaken for a liveblade by voters.

Following my win in the first round, Cikey and the rest of the Nabalis team collaborated with me on finalizing the trainer model.

Numerous factors had to be considered to ensure the cost-effectiveness of manufacturing this product, leading to compromises that, surprisingly, sparked interesting design choices and unforeseen enhancements, particularly to the blade, which now features a ball milled s-grind.

Initially, we had the prototype Reverie in three stages:

The first version at the bottom, the second version in the middle, and the final production version at the top.

The first version featured slightly subbier handles without end weights and a horn design that raised concerns about its pinchiness due to its angular nature compared to the previous Reverie design.
